Goethe B1 Speaking Exam: Tips to Pass for Your German Visa

Dr. Sarah Jenkins
Advanced Linguist

The Goethe B1 certificate is the gold standard for anyone planning to work or live permanently in Germany. Whether you are applying for a Blue Card, family reunification, or even German citizenship (Einbürgerung), passing the "Sprechen" (Speaking) module is often the final hurdle.

The exam focuses not on perfect grammar, but on your ability to handle real-world situations. Here are the keys to handling all three parts of the test.

Teil 1: Together Planning (Gemeinsam etwas planen)

In this 3-minute section, you and a partner (or the examiner) must organize an event together—like a hospital visit to a friend or planning a trip.

The Key: Don't just talk. Interact. The examiner is looking for "Redemittel" (phrases) that show you arelistening to your partner. Use these:

  • "Was hälst du davon, wenn wir...?" (What do you think if we...?)
  • "Das ist eine gute Idee, aber..." (That's a good idea, but...)
  • "Abgemacht! Also, wir treffen uns um..." (Agreed! So, we'll meet at...)

Teil 2: The Presentation (Ein Thema präsentieren)

You will choose one of two topics and give a 2-3 minute presentation. You should use a clear structure:

  1. Introduction: Briefly describe the topic.
  2. Personal Experience: "In meiner Heimat ist es so..." (In my home country it is like this...)
  3. Pros and Cons: Discuss the advantages and disadvantages.
  4. My Opinion: Give your final verdict.
  5. Conclusion: Ask for questions.

Pro-Tip: Use "Verbindungswörter" (connectors) like darüber hinaus (furthermore), einerseits/anderseits (on one hand/on the other hand), and meiner Meinung nach (in my opinion).

Teil 3: Feedback and Q&A

You must listen to your partner's presentation, give them feedback, and ask one follow-up question. Then, you must respond to a question about your own presentation.

Don't panic! The feedback can be simple:

  • "Deine Präsentation war sehr interessant. Ich fand das Thema... besonders wichtig."

The Importance of Fluency Over Accuracy

Many students fail because they pause too long to remember the correct gender of a noun. In the B1 exam, it is better to say "das Tisch" (wrong gender) quickly than to wait 5 seconds to remember "der Tisch". Flow is more important than perfection at this level. Focus on getting your message across clearly and confidently.

Viel Erfolg!
