Part 3 is the most difficult section of the IELTS Speaking test. Unlike the personal questions in Part 1, Part 3 requires you to discuss abstract concepts, societal trends, and hypothetical scenarios. This is where examiners decide if you belong at a Band 6.5 or a Band 8.0.
To succeed, you must move beyond "I think" and "In my opinion." You need to display a high degree of syntactic control.
1. The Power of Generalization
In Part 3, you are rarely asked about yourself. If the examiner asks, "What are the benefits of international travel?", do not talk about your last holiday. Talk about the global impact on cultural exchange and economic stimulus.
Try these starters:
- "From a broader perspective..."
- "When considering the societal impact..."
- "It is widely believed that..."
2. Using Concession (The Band 8.0 Secret)
One of the most effective ways to show range is to qualify your answers. This demonstrates that you can see two sides of an argument.
Band 7.0: "Social media is good because we stay in touch with friends." Band 8.5: "While social media undeniably facilitates global connectivity, it also presents significant challenges regarding digital privacy and mental well-being."
The use of "While" or "Despite" creates a complex sentence structure that satisfies the high-level grammatical descriptors.
3. Dealing with Unknown Topics
If you are asked about something you have never thought about (e.g., "The future of space tourism"), do not stay silent. Admit the challenge and then hypothesize.
Use this bridge: "That’s an intriguing question. I haven’t given it much thought, but if I had to speculate, I’d say that..."
This bridge keeps your fluency score high while you buy time to think of an idea.

In Part 3, his is not the time for short answers. Aim for 3-4 sentences per answer. Expand your reasoning using the PEEL method: Point, Explanation, Example, Link back to the question.
