Are language apps good for IELTS?

Popular English apps are good at building habits, vocabulary and confidence. IELTS rewards something narrower: answering exam-format questions, under time pressure, against four published criteria per skill. Here is what each well-known app is good for, and where it stops.

Duolingo for IELTS

A gamified language-learning app built around short daily lessons and streaks. The same company runs the Duolingo English Test, a separate English test that many universities accept instead of IELTS.

  • Good for: Building a daily habit and basic vocabulary, especially at beginner and lower-intermediate levels.
  • Limits for IELTS: Lessons are not in the IELTS format, and it does not give an IELTS band. Candidates aiming for band 6.5+ usually need practice with full-length exam tasks.
  • How to use it: Fine as a light daily habit. For IELTS itself, switch to timed practice tests once you are at intermediate level.

ELSA Speak for IELTS

An AI pronunciation app that listens to you and gives feedback on individual sounds, word stress and intonation.

  • Good for: Targeted pronunciation work: fixing specific sounds that make you harder to understand.
  • Limits for IELTS: Pronunciation is one of four IELTS Speaking criteria. A pronunciation app does not practise Fluency and Coherence, Lexical Resource or Grammar in exam-style answers.
  • How to use it: A useful add-on if Pronunciation is your weakest criterion, alongside full Part 1, 2 and 3 practice.

Cambly for IELTS

A platform for video lessons and conversation with English tutors, booked by the minute or by subscription.

  • Good for: Real conversation with a human, which builds confidence and listening to natural speech.
  • Limits for IELTS: Tutors vary in IELTS knowledge, and casual conversation is not the same as answering IELTS questions under exam timing. Costs grow with the hours you book.
  • How to use it: Look for a tutor with IELTS experience and ask for exam-format practice, or combine conversation practice with mock tests.

Preply for IELTS

A marketplace for one-to-one online tutors in many languages, including tutors who specialise in IELTS.

  • Good for: Personal feedback from a human, especially on Writing and Speaking, if you choose an experienced IELTS tutor.
  • Limits for IELTS: Quality and price depend entirely on the tutor you pick, and lessons are limited to the hours you pay for.
  • How to use it: Good for targeted feedback on essays and speaking. Use free practice tests between lessons so the paid time goes on feedback, not test-taking.

Speak for IELTS

An AI speaking app for learning English through structured lessons and open conversation with an AI tutor.

  • Good for: Getting lots of speaking practice and confidence in everyday English.
  • Limits for IELTS: It is designed for general fluency rather than the IELTS test format, timing and band criteria.
  • How to use it: Helpful for fluency at lower levels. For the exam, practise real Part 1, 2 and 3 questions under timing.

Talkpal for IELTS

An AI language tutor app for conversation practice in many languages.

  • Good for: Casual speaking practice at any time of day.
  • Limits for IELTS: General conversation practice does not train the IELTS Part 2 long turn or Part 3 abstract discussion, and it is not built around the IELTS criteria.
  • How to use it: Fine for warming up. Add exam-format speaking and full Reading, Listening and Writing practice for the test.

Praktika for IELTS

An English-learning app where you talk with AI avatar tutors in lessons and conversations.

  • Good for: Low-pressure speaking practice, which can help with nerves.
  • Limits for IELTS: It focuses on general English, not the IELTS format or band scoring.
  • How to use it: Useful for confidence. Move to timed IELTS practice in the weeks before your test.

Loora for IELTS

An AI English conversation tutor aimed largely at professional and everyday English.

  • Good for: Conversation practice on work and everyday topics, with feedback.
  • Limits for IELTS: Not built around IELTS question types, timing or the four Speaking criteria.
  • How to use it: Helpful for general fluency; pair it with IELTS-format practice for the exam.

Langua for IELTS

An AI language-learning app combining conversation practice with vocabulary tools.

  • Good for: General speaking practice and building vocabulary in context.
  • Limits for IELTS: General language learning rather than preparation for the IELTS test format.
  • How to use it: Use it for vocabulary and fluency, and IELTS practice tests for the exam itself.

Hallo for IELTS

A language-learning app focused on speaking practice.

  • Good for: Regular speaking practice and confidence in everyday English.
  • Limits for IELTS: Not structured around the IELTS test format or its band criteria.
  • How to use it: Good for habit and confidence; add IELTS-specific practice before your test.

Frequently asked questions

Can I prepare for IELTS with Duolingo?

Duolingo can build vocabulary and a daily habit, but it does not use the IELTS format or give an IELTS band. Most candidates also need timed, full-length IELTS practice for Reading, Listening, Writing and Speaking.

Is a human tutor better than an app for IELTS?

A good IELTS tutor gives the most personal feedback, especially on Writing, but costs more per hour. Many candidates combine a few tutor sessions with free practice tests and AI speaking practice.

What should I use for each IELTS skill?

Timed practice tests for Reading and Listening, model answers and feedback for Writing, and exam-format speaking practice (Parts 1, 2 and 3) for Speaking. General apps help most with vocabulary and confidence.
