How to Register for the IELTS Exam: 2026 Complete Walkthrough
Step-by-step IELTS registration process: choosing a provider, picking a test date, uploading ID, paying the fee, and what happens on test day.
Registering for IELTS is more confusing than it should be. Two providers, three test types, two formats, hundreds of test centres — and a fee that is only partly refundable, which pushes you to get it right the first time. This guide walks you through the IELTS registration process in full, end to end.
Before you register: three decisions
Make these three decisions before opening any booking site:
1. Academic or General Training?
- Academic for university, professional registration (medical, engineering, teaching), or research
- General Training for migration, vocational training, or work-based moves
- UKVI if your visa application specifically requires a Secure English Language Test
If you are unsure, check the exact requirement on the institution's or visa programme's site. Booking the wrong type is the most expensive mistake — you cannot transfer a result.
2. Computer-based or Paper-based?
Taking it from home? IELTS Online is Academic only and not accepted for immigration. See IELTS Online and video-call Speaking.
- Computer-based: 3–5 day result turnaround, more available slots, typing required for Writing
- Paper-based: 13-day result turnaround, fewer slots, handwriting required
Most candidates now choose computer-based for the faster results.
Not sure IELTS is the right test at all? If you're applying to Canada, compare IELTS vs CELPIP Speaking. If PTE is an option for your visa or university, see IELTS vs PTE Speaking. For universities that accept TOEFL, see IELTS vs TOEFL Speaking; for nurses and doctors, IELTS vs OET Speaking; for UK family, settlement or citizenship applications, you may need IELTS Life Skills instead.
3. British Council or IDP?
Both administer the same test. Choose based on:
- Which has earlier slots near you
- Which centre location is more convenient
- Sometimes a small price difference (varies by country)
The 7-step registration process
Step 1: Visit the provider's IELTS page
Go to the British Council IELTS booking page or IDP IELTS for your country. The URL changes by region — search "IELTS [your country] booking" to find the right one.
Step 2: Choose test type and format
Select Academic / General Training / UKVI, then computer-based or paper-based.
Step 3: Pick city and date
Available dates show with:
- Test type (Academic / GT / UKVI)
- Format (CB / PB)
- Centre name and address
- Number of remaining seats
Pick a date at least 6 weeks ahead if you are starting to prepare now. 4 weeks ahead is fine if you have been preparing.
Step 4: Personal details
Enter exactly as they appear on your passport / national ID:
- Full name
- Date of birth
- Nationality
- Current address
- Contact phone and email
Spelling errors here are not editable later without an admin fee. Double-check.
Step 5: ID upload
Upload a clear scan or photo of your passport (preferred) or national ID. The provider will verify the document matches your booking details.
You must bring the exact same ID on test day. Bringing a different ID = no entry.
Step 6: Pay the fee
Test fees vary by country, typically USD 215–260. Accepted payment methods:
- International credit/debit cards (Visa, Mastercard, Amex)
- Local cards (in some markets)
- Bank transfer (some providers)
- Local payment apps (e.g. JazzCash, Easypaisa, GCash, depending on country)
Step 7: Confirmation
Within 24 hours you will receive:
- Booking confirmation email
- Test-day instructions (where to go, when to arrive)
- Access to the provider's free practice materials
- Speaking test schedule (usually within a week of the main test)
What you cannot do after booking
- Change the test date — most providers allow a transfer for a fee, usually only up to 5 weeks before the test
- Switch test type (Academic ↔ General Training) — usually requires cancelling and re-booking
- Switch test centre — limited flexibility, depends on provider
Book carefully. One more reason to choose IELTS on computer: if you miss your target in a single skill, it is the only format eligible for IELTS One Skill Retake, which lets you re-sit just that skill within 60 days. See IELTS One Skill Retake for Speaking.
Common registration mistakes
- Wrong test type — Academic when you needed General Training
- Wrong centre city — booking in a city you do not live in
- ID mismatch — uploaded a national ID, brought a passport on test day
- Name spelling errors — name on booking does not match your ID
- Booking too late — popular slots fill 6–8 weeks ahead
- Wrong currency — switching countries mid-booking can change the fee
What to do after registering
You typically have 6–10 weeks between registration and the test. Use them:
- Weeks 1–2: Diagnostic test to know your starting band
- Weeks 3–6: Daily 25-minute practice on your weakest section
- Weeks 7–8: Three full mock exams under real timing
Make the wait count
Sprechify's 30-Day Speaking Intensive fits comfortably between registration and test day: daily one-hour Speaking sessions ending in full mock tests.
See the 30-day courseWhat to bring on test day
- The exact ID you uploaded during registration (passport or national ID)
- A clear water bottle (no labels)
- Nothing else — phones, watches, jewellery are not allowed
The centre provides pencils, erasers, and the answer sheets.
FAQ
How early should I register for IELTS? 6–10 weeks before your target test date. Popular dates in major cities fill earlier.
Can I register at any IELTS test centre? Usually only in your country of residence. Some providers require proof of residency.
Is the IELTS test fee refundable if I cancel? Usually a partial refund (the fee minus an administration charge of up to 25%) if you cancel more than 5 weeks before the test, and no refund after that. The exact window differs by provider and country, so check your provider's own policy — for example the British Council cancellation policy — before you book.
Can I transfer my IELTS booking to someone else? No. Bookings are tied to your ID and cannot be transferred.
What if I miss my test day? You lose the fee and need to re-book. Medical emergencies may qualify for a partial refund — bring documentation.
