IELTS Reading: Matching headings

Choose the heading that best sums up the main idea of each paragraph or section. There are always more headings than paragraphs, and no heading is used twice.

205 practice sets · 1278 questions · each set is timed at about 90 seconds per question

How to answer

  1. Read the paragraph first, then say its main idea to yourself in a few words.
  2. Focus on the first and last sentences, but read the whole paragraph; the topic sentence isn't always first.
  3. Do the paragraphs you are sure of first so there are fewer headings left for the hard ones.

Common traps

  • Choosing a heading that matches one detail rather than the whole paragraph.
  • Headings that reuse a word from the paragraph but describe something else.
