IELTS Reading: Yes / No / Not Given

Like True/False/Not Given, but about the writer's opinions and claims. YES means the writer agrees, NO means the writer would disagree, and NOT GIVEN means you can't tell what the writer thinks.

457 practice sets · 2233 questions · each set is timed at about 90 seconds per question

How to answer

  1. Look for the writer's voice: evaluative words (useful, misleading, unlikely), hedging (may, seems) and conclusions.
  2. Separate what researchers found from what the writer thinks about it.
  3. Mark NOT GIVEN when the topic is mentioned but the writer gives no view on the specific claim.

Common traps

  • Confusing a reported opinion ("critics argue…") with the writer's own view.
  • Over-reading a neutral description as agreement.
